Since 2022, Tobias Meichsner has served as Deputy Music Director and Répétiteur at the Salzburg State Theatre. In addition to working as musical assistant and répétiteur for all opera productions of the house, he regularly takes on the full musical direction of opera, ballet, concert, and musical theatre productions.

His musical path began with the cello before expanding to include vocal studies, jazz piano, and classical piano training. Through his work on art song, he developed a special affinity for collaborating with singers, which strongly shaped his focus on opera. After earning a Bachelor’s degree in Musicology and Italian at Humboldt University in Berlin, he began orchestral conducting studies at the University of Music and Drama Rostock with Christfried Göckeritz and Daniel Huppert in 2016. There, he gained his first stage experience conducting Handel’s Rinaldo, assisting on Grieg’s Peer Gynt at the Volkstheater Rostock, and directing his own production of Hans Krása’s children’s opera Brundibár in Güstrow.

In 2019, he continued his studies at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar with Nicolás Pasquet and Ekhart Wycik. Assistantships took him to the Deutsches Nationaltheater Weimar (The Electric Saint, Aida), the Landestheater Coburg (Così fan tutte), and the Goetheanum Dornach in Switzerland (Figaro für Operneinsteiger). His training included masterclasses with Arthur Fagen, Johannes Schlaefli (Radolfzell 2022), a seminar with Reinhard Goebel, and an online workshop with Sir Roger Norrington. In 2021, he won second prize at the MDR University Conducting Competition and took part in the national conductor development programme “CAMPUS Dirigieren.” He completed his Bachelor’s degree in 2022 with the musical direction of Mozart’s Così fan tutte at the Weimar University of Music.

That same year, he was appointed répétiteur with conducting duties at the Salzburg State Theatre. There, he assisted in productions including Der Rosenkavalier, Die Fledermaus, Iolanta, Der Kaiser’s neue Walzer (world premiere) and La finta giardiniera, the latter of which he also conducted. After just one season, he was promoted to Deputy Music Director. In this role, he has conducted productions such as the musical Singin’ in the Rain, Flotow’s Martha, the world premieres Skiverliebt and The Endz, as well as numerous revival performances, including Il barbiere di Siviglia, Lucio Silla, Il viaggio a Reims, Hänsel und Gretel, and The Sleeping Beauty.

His repertoire spans opera, operetta, and musical theatre as well as symphonic concerts and ballet. In the 2025/26 season, his engagements include Don Giovanni, Eugene Onegin, Giulio Cesare, The Sound of Music, The Sound of Music Gala, Der fliegende Holländer, and Not the Messiah.
