Tobias Meichsner has been appointed Répétiteur with conducting duties at the Salzburg State Theatre 2022 and was appointed Second Kapellmeister after just one season. There, he has conducted works including Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Lucio Silla, Handel’s Giulio Cesare, Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia and Il viaggio a Reims, Flotow’s Martha, Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel, as well as Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin and The Sleeping Beauty.

In the 2026/27 season, he will take on the musical direction of the world premiere of George’s Secret Key to the Universe. He will also be responsible for the revivals of Not the Messiah and Die kleine Zauberflöte, and will conduct performances of Rossini’s L’italiana in Algeri, Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel, and the ballet Giselle.

As Second Kapellmeister and répétiteur, Meichsner is closely involved in the ongoing musical work of the opera ensemble. As an assistant conductor, he has worked on productions including Der Rosenkavalier, Aida, Der Freischütz, and Der fliegende Holländer. His close collaboration with singers and his focus on the relationship between stage and orchestra form a central part of his artistic work.

Meichsner studied orchestral conducting at the conservatoires in Rostock and Weimar, most recently with Nicolás Pasquet and Ekhart Wycik. During his studies, he gained extensive experience in opera and conducted works including Handel’s Rinaldo and Mozart’s Così fan tutte. In 2021, he was awarded Second Prize at the MDR University Conducting Competition and was selected for the CAMPUS Dirigieren development programme.

His musical background as a cellist, singer and pianist continues to shape his approach to conducting and, in particular, his affinity for opera — for the interplay of voice and language, dramatic development and orchestral sound.
